The Weary Man

“Come all who are heavy laden . . .” I recalled the words of Jesus as I watched the weary man.

One Wednesday evening at about 9:30, we were returning home after another long day. Here, it seems like everything happens at night. I first thought it must be because of the intense heat during the day, but I now realize it is a combination of many factors. Culture, working hours and mostly unhealthy eating and sleeping habits all play their part.

Our taxi driver seemed especially fatigued. He drove very slowly, unlike so many others who are always in a hurry, honking nonstop and jockeying for position on the road. He opened and closed the windows with zombie-like motions. At each stop, he would rest his face in his hands, pulling his cheeks down so far that it reminded me of what youngsters do when trying to make funny faces. He fumbled with the radio and sighed heavily. This poor man was exhausted! The fuel light came on, and I began praying that he wouldn’t fall asleep and leave us stranded without fuel.
I managed to find some peppermint candies in my bag and gave them to him. He gladly popped them into his mouth. We arrived home after what felt like an hour. I was relieved but worried about this man. I wondered if he would make it home safely. As he drove away, I asked God to protect him.

Most people here don’t know about the Sabbath rest. They work long hours, some of them day and night to make enough money to survive. Some people are taxi drivers during the day and work elsewhere at night. God said, “Come unto Me, and I will give you rest.” My heart yearns to share the good news about a God who is not only our Creator and Savior but also the only One who can give true rest.
