Cindy was recently given a map showing the current Native American tribal lands throughout the continental United States. Historians indicate that there were many more tribes, but that they were lost, decimated by disease in the first century after Columbus discovered America. Estimates place the pre-Columbus indigenous population at five to seven million. In 2020, there were 9.7 million who identified as Native Americans, but only 1.9 million were registered with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
I can understand why so many wish to identify a Native American. There are many admirable Native American values.
The twelve Lakota virtues:
Humility (Unsiiciyapi)
Perseverance (Wowacintanka)
Respect (Wawoohola)
Honor (Wayuonihan)
Love (Cantognake)
Sacrifice (Icicupi)
Truth (Wowicake)
Compassion (Waunsilapi)
Bravery (Woohitike)
Fortitude (Cantewasake)
Generosity (Canteyuke)
Wisdom (Woksape)
Who would not admire a culture that reveres these twelve virtues! Unfortunately, like promised wedding vows, these virtues are not always lived out day to day. That is the challenge with people; things can get messy.
I had the privilege of praying with a group of six Lakota brothers and sisters this afternoon. We all held hands and thanked the living God for life and the opportunity to worship Him. One fellow in the group was at the Living Hope Center last Sabbath. Before he left, he said it was good to see me at the “new church.” It was good to see him there, too.
Please pray for us as we start a small group Bible study this week. Please pray for our friends: G & M, L, R, J, L, Sx2, Cx2, Tx2 and Vx2.
