“Count your blessings, name them one by one.” The French version of this hymn has been on my mind often lately. Actually, it seems that God is singing it to me every now and then.
Over the past few months we have had some very painful experiences and emotional moments high and low. People have betrayed us and spread evil rumors about us, and we have no idea why. And yet God sings to me (through a friend sitting next to me on our back porch), “This is the most beautiful place in Africa.” Blessing number one!
People have cut off their relationships with us saying that our church is not good. And yet God sings (through a letter from another friend), “I spent two wonderful months in Natitingou that will always be engraved on my memory. You are doing so many things for people. You help, you listen, you understand. Thank you for what you do. I will never forget what I experienced in your house.” Blessing number two!
We see people around us suffering, hurting each other, getting bitter and jealous, destroying each other and themselves. When will this ever end? And yet God sings (through the children who surround us), “Your house is a haven of harmony, love and laughter.” Blessing number three!
People are jealous of our big fields. Some help themselves and steal whatever they want. And yet God sings (through our bountiful harvest), “You will have more than enough, and nobody can take away what I want to give to you.” Blessing number four!
When we go through difficult times, let’s listen to God’s song. In His graciousness, He not only showers us with His blessings, He also points them out to us when it is too dark for us to see them on our own.—Ulrike Baur
