When Mission Finds a Willing Heart

Some missionary stories begin with large evangelistic campaigns. Others begin with something much simpler: a prayer, a visit and one family willing to open their door.
This is Isabel Mudumbe’s story.

Today, at 14, Isabel is one of the most active girls in our Pathfinder Club in Mozambique. She participates faithfully in the small group, helps with Sabbath programs, studies the Bible with enthusiasm, and already speaks about Jesus with confidence and joy. She is not yet a church member, but her spiritual growth is clearly visible.

Her story began in November 2024, in Eduardo Mondlane Village, in the district of Chicualacuala, northern Gaza Province, where my wife Daniele and I serve as missionaries alongside our Bible worker, Victor Cossa.

That day, Victor was making house-to-house evangelistic visits. Many doors were closed. Many people rejected the message. But among the few families who welcomed him was the home of Sister Ivone, her husband Abel Mudumbe, and their children—including young Isabel.

At that time, Sister Ivone was pregnant and spent most of her time at home. Isabel, though still very young, already carried many responsibilities, helping her mother with daily tasks and caring for the house.

Victor introduced himself, explained his missionary work, and invited the family to study the Bible.

They accepted. That simple “yes” changed everything. From that moment on, Bible studies began. Sister Ivone remained faithful, and there was one detail Victor quickly noticed: She never studied without Isabel beside her.

It was Isabel who read the Bible verses. It was Isabel who followed every explanation. It was Isabel who quietly began to be shaped by the Holy Spirit.

When pregnancy complications forced Sister Ivone to pause the studies, Isabel took on even more responsibilities at home. Even so, Victor never stopped visiting, praying and believing.

When the studies resumed, Isabel blossomed.

In 2025, we opened a Pathfinder Club, and Isabel was one of the first to join. She stood out immediately. She completed every activity, learned quickly, showed natural leadership and shared everything she learned with her family.

On Sabbath, small-group meetings were held at Uncle Félix’s home, and Isabel and her mother became active participants. One day, Isabel even helped lead part of the Bible study.

Victor said, “In that moment, I clearly saw the work of the Holy Spirit.”

Today, Isabel continues to grow as a young leader.

This is why mission matters. A simple visit can become discipleship. A child can become a leader. And behind one open door, there may be another Isabel waiting.
