Face Washcloths

“I would love for you to knit face washcloths for the ladies who come to Women’s retreat! Could you make enough for all of the ladies for next fall?”

The sentences, spoken to me by my friend Gail, the Kentucky-Tennessee women’s ministries director, kept running through my head as I looked at my supplies. I had two small balls of cotton yarn. Not nearly enough to knit for 450 women. Finances have been tight, and I did not have the money to buy all the yarn I needed. With only about 50 done, and enough to make 10 more, I considered dropping the project altogether.

Yet, that sentence kept running through my head “Could you make enough . . .” I bowed my head and prayed for wisdom. In the quiet that followed, I heard God’s gentle voice speaking in my head “Try Me, and see if I will not open unto you the windows of Heaven and pour out to you so much cotton yarn that you cannot knit it all.” (Malachi 3:10, paraphrased). I finished my prayer, “Okay Lord, I will try You, but, I only have 2 small balls of yarn and then it’s Your turn!”

Two days later, I got a Christmas box, with 2 pounds of cotton yarn in it! I quietly went to my room, grabbed a tissue box, bowed my head, and thanked God for being God, and fulfilling His promise to provide everything I would need. As I knit, I spent time praying, for my teammates who are already in Papua New Guinea, for my donors, family, and friends, and for the ladies who would receive these face washcloths.

Since then, I have completed enough face washcloths for this entire project, and, God has always re-stocked my yarn supply before it got down to what I started with.

This experience has reminded me that God can and should be trusted, with both the big and the small things in life, and His timing is always perfect. If you did not attend the KY-TN women’s retreat, and would like to have a set of face washcloths, please e-mail me your address and I will be happy to send you some.
