During a recent camp meeting, I was unexpectedly reunited with Liam—a 14-year-old I had met two years earlier while coordinating teens at a different camp meeting. As we caught up, Liam spoke about Christ with sincerity and shared his deep desire to reach the unreached one day.
After an outreach, a group of us gathered at a friend’s home for dinner. Liam noticed that the car we had borrowed was dirty from the weekend. Without being asked, he came to me and offered to wash it. I agreed, planning to thank him with a small payment for his effort.
When we arrived, Liam began washing the car and even the trailer, his friend Zak joining him. I stood back for a moment, watching. There was nothing rushed about his work. He scrubbed carefully, intentionally—every panel, every mark—until the car looked new again.
Eventually, I walked over and said, “Thank you, Liam, but you really don’t have to be so thorough.”
He looked up at me, almost surprised, and simply said, “What does the Bible teach?”
Then he went back to work.
I stood there, quiet. Convicted. I was reminded of Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
Later, I learned that Liam wakes up at 4:00 a.m. each day to spend time in the Word, complete his responsibilities, and stay ahead in his studies. His goal is to finish school early so he can give his life fully to mission work.
This is not a story about a remarkable young man.
It is a story about a faithful God.
A God who is still shaping hearts, still calling the young, and still reminding the rest of us what wholehearted devotion looks like.
