Sayha Sings and Om Speaks

A woman from the church we visited asked me if I could take her to Phnom Penh to find a job. She wants to be around Christians and would like to raise her grandson as a Christian,” Josh reported. “I know you guys were thinking of getting a house helper. Are you interested in hiring her?”

This was the beginning of our relationship with Om (which means Grandma) and Sayha, her two-year-old grandson. They are staying with us in Phnom Penh while we do our language learning. Om helps with household chores and provides a perfect opportunity for practicing our growing language skills.

At first, Sayha was very insecure, screaming whenever the outside door was closed and clinging to his grandma like a little koala bear, but consistent love won his confidence. Playing chase, riding in the truck and walking together in the evening have all helped build Sayha’s trust. Evening worships are one of our favorite times to connect with him. He loves the simple, hands-on songs we sing. His face beams as he holds a little plastic lizard while we sing “Animals Animals,” and he energetically waves the felt rainbow as we remember “Who Made the Beautiful Rainbow.” We knew he was adjusting when he started singing one of the worship songs in English. One night recently, while Adam was helping Jaden pray, Sayha brought smiles to all of our faces by sweetly joining Jaden in prayer.

Om has also been progressing spiritually, reading her Bible and asking questions. A few weeks ago she talked to the pastor of her church about being baptized into “the church she loves.” He recommended doing some Bible studies to make sure she has a clear understanding of salvation. A few days ago while we were finishing breakfast, she asked us about studying together. The language barrier still presents a challenge for us, but we have arranged with the girls’ language helper to translate as Adam studies the Bible with Om. What a blessing for both of them! She will be able to study, and Adam will gain valuable experience in discussing spiritual issues in the local language.

God has been working with Om for some time, using many people to draw her to Him. We are so thankful for the privilege of being involved in part of her spiritual journey. When we get to heaven, how fun it will be to introduce this precious soul to all of you who support her growing faith even though you have never met her. Thank you!
