One of my favorite Bible stories as a child was when young Samuel heard God calling his name. Samuel responded and began his life-long work of being a prophet. Somewhere along my way to adulthood, the focus turned more toward talking to God rather than listening to God. Recently I had an experience that reminded me how important it is for us to listen, as Samuel did long ago.
In the early morning air, I sat in the backyard of our Cambodian home, having my worship. Reading through the Lord’s Prayer reminded me to submit my desires to His will and trust Him to give us our “daily bread.” I poured out my heart to God, reminding Him that we were trusting Him to provide our needs and maybe some of our wants as well. I felt a deep peace that God would provide the funding we lacked and looked forward to seeing how He would provide.
Later, as I checked our donor sheet, I noticed that someone new had given a significant donation to our project. When I called to thank them and get to know them a little, I asked what had prompted their gift. The lady told me the beautiful story of how God had led her to the AFM website, and she felt impressed to give to our project when she saw our names. Then, I remembered how Samuel had heard God’s voice and responded, “Yes, Lord, thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10).
It is an incredible experience to pray and know that God has heard and answered your prayer. But as I reflect on this story, it seems even more wonderful to hear God speak to your heart and you respond, “Yes, Lord, thy servant heareth.” I really admire those who not only pray and trust God but who hear His promptings and obey. To all those who hear God’s voice in your lives and obey, thank you for listening!
