Enoch is a young missionary kid who loves the outdoors and taking pictures of birds. I had the opportunity to interview him about his favorite hobby. He wanted me to share some of his pictures with you.
Why do you like taking pictures of birds?
It’s challenging, which makes it more fun. It takes observation skills and stalking ability.
Why in Cambodia?
Because that is where we live as missionaries.
What are some of the benefits of being outdoors?
The green of the plants and the blue of the sky help to relax you. It brings you closer to God through observation of His first book, nature. You learn more about God, and to get pictures of birds, you have to sit and observe. These are skills needed by a cross-cultural missionary as well.
What is your favorite bird that you have gotten a picture of and why?
Probably the White-rumped Shama. I love to listen to its call.
What bird would you like to get a picture of that will be the most challenging?
A Red-billed Malkoha because they are rarely sighted. Some bird books don’t even show that they live here! Also, there are a couple of critically endangered birds that I would like to get a picture of.
*What is the most endemic bird you have taken a picture of? *
First of all, endemic means this is the only place in the world where it lives. Secondly, I don’t have a picture, but I have seen the Cambodian Tailorbird.
What is the prettiest bird you have seen?
The Red-billed Blue Magpie and the Green-billed Malkoha. No, wait, the Indochinese Roller, or the Common Kingfisher, or one of the Bee-eaters or the Hoopoe. . . . I don’t know.
How do you think you can use your taking pictures of birds to help others know about Jesus?
You meet up with tribespeople while stalking and walking through the woods, and you can make new acquaintances and friends. They love to look through my binoculars! I have been able to use them to help them to find honey.
Would you recommend taking pictures of birds as a good hobby for other young people your age?
Yes, but people are different and this may not be for everybody.
