About the People

The Palawano are a tribal group inhabiting the mountains in the south of Palawan. They are cultivators, forest-foragers, and hunters who somewhat resemble Malaysians. The Palawano language varies from region to region but seems to have similarities to Malay. Palawanos live in huts that they make from materials found in the jungle surrounding them. They live in family groups instead of typical villages and tend to live with the wife’s family group rather than the husband’s. These animistic people are controlled by their fear of the spirits, and the children are taught to fear them from their youngest days. Mainly illiterate but bright people, their youngsters have a yearning to learn. On the other hand, the adults have a fear of change and cling tenaciously to the ways of their forefathers.

Frontier Stories

The Silent Language

As I absorbed everything about that moment, I knew that I was in the right place and that God was doing something He loves to do — letting His strength shine through our weakness.

Thank You for the Palawan in My Life!

A Coordinated Attack

From time to time, different students come to our clinic with the same symptoms, recounting seeing horrible figures that no one else sees. Please continue praying for these students and families so the Holy Spirit can live in their hearts.

Anxiety Opens the Door to the Gospel

Through repeated contact with Rumil, we can continue teaching him about Jesus, who will gladly take Rumil’s problems, anxieties and sorrows upon Himself and give him peace.

A Sweet Savor

How important it is to immerse ourselves in their lives and culture—to experience their experience—until we find ourselves a lot less judgmental.

A Matter of Perspective

May our prayers be, “Lord, please give me a heart like Thine, a heart of love for those who act unlovely, who may be smelly, unruly, rude and seem incorrigible. Help me see past the exterior to the heart that You see. Change my heart, O God.”

Our Road to Missionary Life

Missionary life humbles us; it keeps us praying, crying, praising, hoping and fully expecting that one day there will be Palawano in heaven because we came . . . and for now . . . stayed.
